Hungarian tenor Gyula Rab is an ensemble member of Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz since the season 2018/19 in Munich, Germany. His roles there included Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Ferrando in Cosí fan tutte, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni by Mozart, Prince Ramiro in La Cenerentola and Conte Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini, Elvino in Bellini’s La Sonnambula, Ernesto in Don Pasquale and Beppe in Rita by Donizetti, Oronte in Alcina and Tempo in Il Trionfo del Tempo ed il Disinganno by Handel, Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Rosillon in Die Lustige Witwe by Lehár, Gonzalve in L’Heure Espagnole by Ravel and Fenton in Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor by Nikolai.

He was a member of the International Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zurich for the season 2016/17. Gyula is an alumnus of the International Opera School of Royal College of Music in London as a Sir Roger and Lady Carr Soirée d’Or Scholar. He also holds a Master of Music degree from the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest where he was a student of the world renowned soprano Éva Marton and was awarded the UNELMA-Dream Scholarship and the Le Meridien Prize by the Ari S Kupsus Salon Concert Society. hhh

Other operatic engagements include Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte by Mozart, Achilles in Iphigiénie en Aulide by Gluck and Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff at the Hungarian State Opera, Silvio in L’arbore di Diana by y Soler at Theater an der Wien, Fenton in Nikolai’s Die Lustige Weiber von Windsor at Wiener Volksoper, Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi in Suzhou at iSING! Festival, China, Louis in Angels in America by Eötvös in Opera Wrocław, Osroa in Adriano in Siria by Pergolesi at the Cadogan Hall in London.

Gyula also sang the role of Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress touring prestigious concert halls in Europe as an Equilibrium Young Artist like Gasteig München, Elbphilharmony Hamburg, Concertgebouw Amsterdam Philharmonie de Paris, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Kulturpalast Dresden.

As concert soloist he often performs the works of Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Rossini, Kodály and Bartók and has sung under the baton of Ádám Fischer, Péter Eötvös, Jakub Hrůša, Barbara Hannigan, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Tamás Vásáry, Ken’ichiro Kobayashi and János Kovács. Collaborations with orchestras include such as The Münchner Philharmoniker, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, The Ludwig Orchestra, The Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Valencia Symphony Orchestra, Danubia Symphony, Pannon Philharmonic and Hungarian Radio Symphony.

Gyula is also proud to be a recipient of the Independent Opera Postgraduate Voice Fellowship and the International Opera Awards Foundation Bursary.

In 2016 he received the prominent Junior Prima Award in Hungary and in 2024 he was  awarded the Prima Prize in the category of performing arts.

He was a finalist of the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Award at the Wigmore Hall in 2015 and was a Jerwood Young Artist at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
